Summary

Barbara Freymuth, 1978. Image courtesy of the artist.

Barbara Freymuth was a German-American photographer. While she lived in the Dominican Republic, she and her husband turned photography into a profession by doing portraits. Later, when she immigrated to the United States, she helped support the family by taking pictures of children.

In 1981, she began to create a form of photography that she entitled Encores. These are black and white prints of 2-14 parts, mounted together. They all originate from one single negative, repeated again and again, straight or reversed, giving the picture a strong sense of order and rhythm. During a five-year period, she created over 80 Encores. The subjects of her photographs are close-ups of natural objects such as snow and ice, stones, bark, leaves, fruits, or anything else which she considers photogenic. She exhibited extensively in New Jersey, including the Squibb Gallery in Princeton, New Jersey and the New Jersey State Museum.
